Cupping is an ancient Chinese medical technique used when there is tightness and pain in the muscles. A cup is placed over an acupoint which breaks up qi and blood stagnation relieving pain and internal disease. Traditionally animal horns were used, then bamboo cups, and now days glass cups are used.
What happens in a cupping treatment?
A practitioner obtains a cotton ball that has been soaked in alcohol with a pair of forceps, this is then ignited and encircles into the empty glass jar, as this heat burns out the oxygen in the cup this creates a vacuum, and if quickly put over the correct acupoint will cause the skin to be raised. The experience should feel relaxing.
How long and frequent is a cupping treatment?
Cupping is left in situ between 5-15minutes.
Are there any risks or side effects of cupping?
Cupping should not be used if there is high fever, convulsions, cramps, and allergic skin conditions. Cupping usually leaves bruising which will subside in a few days resolving illness.
