Chinese dietary therapy is quite complex and needs to be tailored to the individual. Food is classified in terms of their flavour, direction it goes in the body, and thermal property. On a basic level Chinese food therapy is based on yin and yang principles.
In which, to achieve optimal health a balance of yin and yang within the body can be achieved by eating certain foods.
Yin- is associated with Cold, Interior, Deficiency, Chronic Illness, Salty, Bitter and Sour Foods.
Yang- is associated with Heat, Exterior, Excess, Acute Illness, Pungent and Sweet Foods.
So if you have a cold condition in which you often feel cold, tired, have loose frequent stools, and copious clear urine you would try to eat more yang warming foods.
Conversely, if you suffer from a lot of heat such as feel hot, red face, red eyes, high blood pressure, skin eruptions, stools are dry and smelly, and have dark urine you would try to balance the body by eating cooling yin foods.
