Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese medical technique useful for any type of pain or fever. It is particular beneficial for diseases caused by exposure to external elements (wind, cold, rain, heat) such as your common cold and for those “can’t move” or “frozen” muscle conditions.
It involves using a tool such as a simple spoon to ‘scrape/chafe or rub’ along the surface of the skin. When a practitioner ‘scraps’ the patient’s skin it causes the muscles to loosen relieving pain and the internal disease.
What happens in a Gua Sha treatment?
If a person has no pain or illness nothing will appear. If afterwards raised red dots appear on the skin it indicates illness in the body. The colour of these dots is diagnostic. It indicates the severity of the condition and how long it will take the person to recover. Generally speaking, the lighter the coloured dots the less severe the illness and quicker recovery.
For example, a person who has light pink raised dots should expect their skin to return to normal within that day or two (and hence their illness is very acute and they should expect a speedy recovery). A person with very dark red/ purple dots should expect their skin to return to normal in about 5-7 days (hence this person has a chronic illness and recovery will take longer).
How long and frequent is a Gua Sha treatment?
A typical Gua Sha treatment takes 5-20minutes. Subsequent Gua Sha can treatments only be done when all of the raised dots have vanished. A Gua Sha treatment is complete when no red dots appear- this indicates a healthy body.
Are there any risks or side effects of Gua Sha?
Gua Sha should not be used over open wounds, bruises, abrasions, skin moles, in hemorrhage or over the abdominal area of pregnant women. Used appropriately there are minimal side effects, the person should feel pain relief and the treatment should facilitate in curing the internal illness.
